Introducing

Victoria from Diddums

We’re so excited to introduce you to one of the brands we work closely with and absolutely adore! Victoria from Diddums has truly created something special. She’s living the dream, embracing the beauty of country life while building a gorgeous curation of fashion and lifestyle pieces through her brand, Diddums, based in Bridgetown, Western Australia.

More than just a fashion label, Diddums is a lifestyle brand. Victoria, it's founder and designer, creates small, locally made collections with immense love and dedication to her vision. Working with her has been such a joy and we feel lucky to have found someone who loves our Japanese denim as much as we do!

We recently had the chance to ask Victoria a few questions to get a little insight into her brand, her process, and what inspires her to do what she does.

1. Can you share the story behind your brand and what it’s all about?

Diddums began when I started making kids’ clothes for my niece Lola and nephew Harry many years ago (hence the name). I had always sewn through uni – as a poor student I couldn’t afford designer clothes – so I made my own. It has evolved into what it is now – a focus on simple lines, comfortable designs, quality fabrics and designs that flatter the real, unfiltered, unphotoshopped female form.

2. What influences your designs, and how do you approach choosing fabrics?

As a ‘mature’ female myself, I tend to design with comfort and ‘hiding the chunky bits’ in mind. Over the years, I have fine tuned a few of my best selling designs to the point where repeat customers have them in each colour way. This is particularly the case with my wide legged linen pants and my denim or corduroy ‘comfy’ pants. It is so gratifying to see something I have designed and handmade in my studio, being worn and appreciated again and again. Slow fashion – small batch – quiet luxury – simple lines – natural fabrics. I prefer fabrics that breathe, that feel good against the skin, and that I know where they originated.

One of the reasons that I use Potter Textiles is that they clearly state the origins and content of fabrics, they give good honest advice on fabric care and drape and they stock a beautiful range. I also love the personal touch – I still get surprised that they know who I am when I come to visit.

3. You use a lot of our Japanese traditional indigo rope dyed denim. What do you love about working with Japanese indigo denims?

I wear a lot of denim myself – jeans and denim skirts are my go to in cooler months and let’s face it, ‘Fridgetown’, where I live, has some of the coldest mornings in WA.

The Japanese indigo rope dyed denim maintains its colour, washes and softens beautifully and frankly, denim sells. The latest stretch denim I have been using is amazing – the recovery is fantastic and the jeans and skirts I have made using this denim have sold really well. (And I kept one of each for myself)

4. We love that you are based in Bridgetown a small country town south of Perth. What's it like running a small business in a country town?

I love living in Bridgetown, it is a very supportive and creative community. We live on 3 acres on top of a hill looking across the valley to Sunnyhurt winery. I never get tired of that view.

It's not always easy being so far away from everything - I used to do a lot of markets in Perth - then I started Loft with a few friends. LOFT, a retail space for handmade products here in Bridgetown, has now been successfully going for 13 years and has a great website for those unable to visit in person.

I have since sold that business to a local, Justine, and it makes me so happy to see it continue to thrive and support so many WA handmade businesses - new designs (as well as variations on old favourites) - new website and new chapter.
